Overwatch Clip Show 13 : Concert of Ults.

This weekend's Overwatch play was actually pretty awesome, particularly in competitive.


6 wins and 2 losses?  That's a good night in Overwatch.  I'm actually edging up towards the upper forties again, which feels pretty sweet.  Contrary to the heroes highlighted above, my time was actually mostly split between Mercy and Zarya - I only pull out Pharah when my team needs to punch through a hard defense (or on the Ilios ruins), and Lucio owns the indoor point in Nepal.  Annnyway... clip show!

It's a long one.



0:00 - 0:17 : MERCY.  Is there anything better than getting a 100 heat elimination before a 3-rez?  I'm not sure there is.


0:17 - 0:35 : ZARYA.  You're going to see a lot of Zarya today.  This was the final moment of an epic attack on Dorado against a really vicious opposing team with an Ana support, a capable Genji and a Zarya of their own.  This vid concludes with clips of the push to the final chepoint, and the entire last section of the round - just for the sake of hearing my teammate's exultation at the spectacular final moments - but this is the highlight vid the game auto-produced of it.  Specifically,
  1. their Ana drops Nano Boost on their Zarya
  2. I fire my Gravitron Surge into the choke to gather them up
  3. Twerkins, our Reaper, pops his Death Blossom in the middle of the gathered foes
  4. their Mercy casts Resurrection, undoing our good work
  5. ...and there's more you'll see at the end of the vid. 
0:35 - 1:41 : This is the first time I ever got Nana Boosted when I wasn't at like 5% health, and actually able to use the buff - but it's also another example of a series of ults popping in quick succession. 
  1. our Lucio drops the Sound Barrier,
  2. their Winston unleashes his Primal Rage, but Primal Rage is more about disrupting formations than actually doing damage, so I'm not particularly worried about that, but when
  3. our Ana Nano Boosts me, I figure I should drop some heightened DPS on that giant health bar - but then
  4. their Soldier pops Tactical Visor, so I turn around to deal with that instead, raising my Zarya bubble and getting as up into his grill as I can to protect my team. 
And then it's just cleanup!  But more importantly...

Epic card!


And I know 12 high energy kills doesn't sound like much, but this run was such a sweep on our part that I got 13 total.  And I mention that because 13 eliminations was the gold medal for elims that match! 


Gold gold gold gold and zero deaths I am a fucking Zarya God but honestly that was a pretty easy run in Quick Play.  I've never had a better run on Anubis.  So obviously I uploaded the entire, three-minute match to YouTube.  Because the world has a right to know that my actually-quite-mediocre Zarya performance was amazing for that one match. 

1:41 - 1:59 : This was just a really nice collection of eliminations.  That Pharah must've felt so cheated.  She was right at the door!  Thank goodness that Tracer unloaded her pistols into our Reaper after I shielded him, or I may not've had the damage to take out that Bastion, turret and Torb.  

Lovely. 


1:59 - 2:17 : REINHARDT.  I am so smad I wasn't able to save this whole bloody clip, straight from gameplay - it was beautiful, mostly because I solo'd a Bastion in turret mode as Rein.  He was near the bottom of the stairs when I started bearing down on him with my shield up, and he had to reload - so instead of reloading, he reconfigured to Recon mode and retreated up the stairs.  So I followed, swinging my hammer all the way.  He got to the health pack, and went back into Turret mode, but by then it was too late.  Bam. 100 fire Bastion elim on frickin' Rein.  And then the Mercy and Soldier were just kind of icing on top. 


2:17 - 2:33 : MERCY.  
  1. their Zarya throws out Gravitron Surge,
  2. their Reaper rolls through with Die Die Die,
  3. our Pharah begins her Rocket Barrage and I explain to Reaper that no, in fact,
  4. Heroes Never Die. 


2:33 - 2:52 : ZARYA.  Zarya's ult has exceptional synergy with almost every offensive ult in the game.  Genji, Pharah, Reaper, Soldier, Tracer, Junkrat and D.Va all love to see a sweet little collection of enemy bodies gathered into one convenient place for their ultra beatdown - but I'd never seen a Hanzo just jump on it like this.

Zarya's ult also has one of the slowest charge times in the game, so I really need to start spamming "my ult is ready" when it's available with a good combo character on my team.

2:52 - 3:28 : The D.Va in this clip is my brother, who it seems just doesn't play Overwatch without me - and I kind of have to constantly explain the rules of the game to him.  In particular, he never plays competitive without me, so it blew his mind that we had to play like four rounds in Volskaya for a single game one day.

Anyway, once again we have a sequence of ults:

  1. their Soldier activates Tactical Visor,
  2. I fire in my Gravitron Surge
  3. my brother triggers his Self Destruct,
  4. their Rein fires off Earth Shatter, hits no one with it, and then turns his shield to absorb the detonation of my brother's MEKA. 
My brother's reaction? 

"What the fuck?"  You don't hear in the vid, because of some weird thing with my settings, my response - "Rein can block it with his shield."

"Bull shit the shield!" he says.  But yeah, that's just the deal.  A lot of ults can be just shut right down with many characters' cooldown abilities.  Yes, D.Va can absorb an entire Pharah or Reaper or McCree or Mei or Tracer ult with her Defense Matrix.  Reinhardt can entirely block them with his shield.  Ana can shut down every active ult in the game with her sleep dart, I've watched my brother diffuse a Reaper's Death Blossom by just holding his Defense Matrix around it, and, as a further example, 
  1. (6) Zarya can completely negate Tracer's Pulse Bomb, when applied to my brother, with a projected barrier. 
  2. (7) I could have also survived Junkrat's Riptire if I'd been quicker on the trigger on my personal barrier, but you can't win 'em all. 

3:28 - 3:46 : PHARAH. Any time you're able to unload Rocket Barrage and live is a good time, even if you only get two kills from it (with the help of my team's Roadhog!), but the icing on the cake is definitely the direct hit on the Ana after I hit the ground.  

That was the sweetest plum. 


3:46 - 4:23 : D.VA.  I've always wanted to be comfy with D.Va, but no, I never have been.  With her recent round of buffs, though, I felt compelled to give her another shot, so I hopped into quick play and rolled through Volskaya with her in a pretty darned smooth win.  

What begins with a few boring steps up to their Widowmaker and the Victory splash ends with the Play of the Game that made it all possible.  I'm nowhere near a boss with D.Va yet - strangely, I'm far more comfortable with Zarya, who apparently is a much harder tank to play - so my inexperience is definitely a big part of what makes a three-kill PotG feel frickin' epic


4:23 - 4:40 : MERCY.  A very sizable part of being a good Mercy is knowing when to get the heck out of Dodge, 'cause when a Soldier's got me in his sights or a Junkrat starts spamming pumpkin bombs, my teensy-weensy health bar means I'll be the first to die - but if I'm being honest, it was probably dumb luck that saw me zipping over to my brother just as the enemy Ana used her ult on their Pharah, who used her ult on my team and wiped half of us. 

But Mercy's here to save the day yayyy!

4:40 - 5:10 : Heheh I killed their Mercy.  

5:10 - 5:36 : Another phenomenal sequence of ults. 
  1. Their Ana casts Nana Boost on their Soldier, 
  2. their Soldier uses Tactical Visor as their Rein charges in, pinning and killing our Junkrat. 
  3. Their Pharah uses Rocket Barrage and takes out our Zarya. By this point, 
  4. their Rein has flanked around behind me, and uses Earth Shatter, but misses all of us - particularly me, because I'd just begun a Guardian Angel flight (and was thus off the ground and immune,) and
  5. I was able to cast Ressurect literally a half-second after their Soldier killed my brother, rezzing 3 of my team. Then 
  6. our Torbjorn activates Molten Core as 
  7. our Lucio unleashes the Sound Barrier, perfectly timed, as it entirely absorbs
  8. their Reaper's Death Blossom and we remain all alive and on the point.  
So that's eight out of ten character's ultimate abilities over the course of twenty-six seconds.  And then we held the point and won!  Yay!


5:36 - 5:53 : ZARYA.  You feel uniquely powerful, as Zarya, when you go max charge and just start melting the enemy team.  On this particular round in Ilios, I was kicking ass and enjoying a nice, long kill streak right up until I didn't look where I was going and fell down the well.  

Ah, humility.  You always find me when I lose my way.. 

And now, we get into the run whose highlight began our show.  

5:53 - 6:13 : This is me, Twerkins and GoodWill tearin' through a Comp match together, and it begins with me deciding not to duel the enemy's Zarya.  A Zarya-Vs-Zarya fight pretty much just comes down to who pops their personal shield last, and I just wasn't up for dealing with that when I should have been backing up my team - so when I rejoined the payload, she swung around through the flank to drop her Graviton Surge on us - so naturally I just shielded myself and my Mercy.  

My charge bounces up to 100, and their Zarya and I poke each other a few more times before, again, backing off and rejoining our teams.  

6:13 - 6:28 : It's just killin' a squishy, but I was really pleased by the way I didn't fire when their Zarya projected a barrier on this Ana - just gave it two seconds - and then fired off an AoE explosive charge that catches her, just as the barrier drops and she makes it to cover.  

Delicious. 

6:28 - 6:44: I don't know if I told my brother this, but Zarya is basically D.Va's tank counter.  Her Defense Matrix - Godly against nearly all things - is nothing against Zarya's primary fire (the beam).  Her beautifully predictable ult is nothing to me but a free +50 charge for my weapon, and even when that's not around I love running up into a D.Va's face so she fires those only-high-damage-at-close-range auto shotties into my face, and can't stop before she fully charges my shield, and then just dance away from her with a powered-up superbeam.  

But really I'll just never get tired of absorbing D.Va ults. 

And then their Zarya lets her Graviton Surge off the chain, but our Rein is there to shield it, and I jump in and pop my barrier on him to bring my charge up to 96!  And then I don't use it to kill a single enemy because I suck sometimes!

6:44 - 7:00 : And this is the entire final ninety seconds of this match.  

We begin, fresh off that hot charge, by helping to melt their ulting Genji.  And what to my wondering eyes should appear but that damned enemy Zarya again!  Well, this time, I don't back down - and I get her down to about 20% health before our Soldier finishes her off.  

Their Ana takes a few pot shots at us, but oh my God how does their D.Va have her ult ready again? 

No matter, my charge level was dipping a bit anyway.  Bam - back up to 97 - which is more than enough to cut through D.Va's new Mech like butter. 

We clean up some stragglers - Junkrat goes down, but Genji and Zero Suit D.Va get away. Then their Zarya pops another ult, and protecting myself and our Soldier brings me back up to 100 charge.  

Their Junkrat fires off his Riptire and I slip into the flanking hallway as Twerkins, our Reaper, takes out the threat.   Then, I ask him over chat if he's got Death Blossom ready.  

He does.  And we stroll up the final hill, for our final concert of ults. 
  1. Their Ana Nana Boosts that durned Zarya, 
  2. I fire my Gravitron Surge into the choke and sit back, doing nothing because 
  3. I assumed Twerkins would just clean house with his Death Blossom.  But lo!
  4. Their Mercy casts Resurrection, and all our good work was for naught!  And we all just go crazy and I've got full charge so their D.Va gets shredded like tissue but
  5. their Genji whips out his Dragonblade, and a quick particle barrier on Twerk saves his grimdark bacon!
They can't get back on the point fast enough, and that's the game.  

That's the game.
