Personal Note - oh man I didn't come here for this.

http://www.listen-tome.com/the-fallen/

I really should update the Comics links in the sidebar.  I've been meaning to for a while, as my nightly e-reading includes a lot of stuff that isn't listed there.  Some of those sidebar comics aren't even updating any more, and meanwhile I'm enjoying WHOMP! and Scenes From A Multiverse and lately I've been loving The Nib, which is a site that constantly updates with hyper-liberal political comics and some wonderful longer-form visual-reporting stuff that just thrills me.

Anywho, the reason I bring up webcomics is because I clicked on Dresden Codak just now and read the latest page, and then scrolled down to a large text block wherein the artist explains that there hasn't been an update in a while due to their chronic depression.  They write that "chronic depression is a persistent mood disorder that varies in intensity for years at a time. The symptoms include indecisiveness, problems with concentration, fatigue, lack of self-esteem, and a sense of excessive guilt at all times."

I re-read that last sentence about three times.  The "excessive guilt" part really hit home.  I think that's a wonderful description of it - but it's worth noting that my immediate, corrective follow-up insight was that "those are also the symptoms of someone who's just a lazy fuck-up asshole, and is self-aware enough to realize it."  Like, it's conceivable that one might feel super-guilty because they've done bad shit that they damn well should be ashamed of, y'know?

I'm not saying the hyperintelligent auteur behind Dresden Codak is a fuck-up asshole, I'm just saying Doctor Gregory House knows that two different conditions can have identical presentations - and is always entirely open to the concept that someone may be a complete fucking asshole.

You don't know me, Aaron Diaz!

Y'know what old comic I really wish was still updating?  Hark! A Vagrant!  I wonder what Kate Beaton's been doing, lately?
