John Carmack, programming wiz and all-around genius has left id Software, the developer he founded in 1991, which went on to produce the seminal Wolfenstein 3D and DOOM. He and his team were the parents of the first-person shooter - a legendary company.
In recent years, id's success has allowed Carmack to dabble in pet projects like rocket science. Most recently, he signed on a chief technology officer at (virtual-reality headset producer) Oculus VR, working on the Rift - though at the time it was announced it would not effect his work at id. It seems that was incorrect.
"John Carmack, who has become interested in focusing on things other than game development at id, has resigned from the studio. John's work on id Tech 5 and the technology for the current development work at id is complete, and his departure will not affect any current projects. We are fortunate to have a brilliant group of programmers at id who worked with John and will carry on id's tradition of making great games with cutting-edge technology. As colleagues of John for many years, we wish him well."
-Tim Willits, Studio Director, id Software
"I wanted to remain a technical adviser for Id, but it just didn't work out. Probably for the best, as the divided focus was challenging"We all wish you luck, John - you've given us countless hours of first-person joy, and I don't begrudge you the need to do your own thing.
